October 15

October 15, 2007 is a special day for me. It is the day I purchased and moved into my DC studio. I moved from a 550 sq ft junior one bedroom into a 400 sq ft studio. The place is very small but I love it. When I was first shown the studio, I knew it belonged to me. I had a short list of "must haves". I had to have a window in the kitchen, a nice entryway, hardwood floors and metro-accessibility. Also, I wanted to be able to walk to a grocery store, cleaners and a coffee shop. I found all of the "must haves" in this place.

Inspiration for my space comes from magazines/books, objects, feelings, vacations at the beach and my white shirt. I know this sounds silly but hear me out. A white shirt can be worn with jeans or worn with a suit..it can be casual or formal. I love the flexibility of a white shirt especially a tailored white shirt. I have yet to find the perfect white shirt as I have yet to create the perfect space.

The look I am going for in my studio is modern Hampton's which I translate as modern classic with nautical influences. I have painted my walls in varied shades of whites. My furniture is either white, chocolate or black to maintain uniformity. There are splashes of color in books and accessories...which can easily be put away or traded out.

October 15 is special also because it is the day I discovered my love of interior design. I laid in my bed on that first night and made a promise to take advantage of all the opportunities the city has to offer me. This is my beginning, where my interest became love and I hope to express that in my white shirt.
